Jatinga bird suicide a mystery

Filed under: Creatures, Unbelievable — justbelieveit @ 6:44 am

A bizarre phenonmenon of flocks of birds plunging to their deaths from the sky in a village called Jatinga in Assam remains a mystery, since it started about a century ago.

Unbelievable ?

Jatinga, a village on a ridge, is located in the North Cachar Hills district, Assam State in India. It is 330km south of Guwahati. It is most famous for the phenomenon of birds “committing suicide”. It is mainly inhabited by about 2,500 Jaintia tribal people.

At the end of monsoon months, mysterious behaviour of birds takes place. During moonless and foggy dark nights between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., flying birds come crashing to the ground with no prior warning whatsoever. These birds are likely disoriented by the presence of nearby lights, and villagers in the area take advantage of these birds to kill them for food.

India: Woman marries Cobra of her dreams

Filed under: People, Unbelievable — justbelieveit @ 5:20 am

There have been several strange weddings. People have exchanged marriage vows on an aircraft, underwater and even on internet. But probably the following one is much more unusual than all the rest.

A woman in India fell in love with a cobra and got married to it. It wasn't a small wedding. There were 2000 attendees for this unusual wedding.

Unbelievable ?

The following is the press report about it:

A woman who fell in love with a snake has married the reptile at a traditional Hindu wedding celebrated by 2,000 guests in India's Orissa state, reports said.

Bimbala Das wore a silk saree for the ceremony Wednesday at Atala village near the Orissa state capital Bhubaneswar.

Priests chanted mantras to seal the union, but the snake failed to come out of a nearby ant hill where it lives, the Press Trust of India (PTI) said.

A brass replica snake stood in for the hesitant groom.

"Though snakes cannot speak nor understand, we communicate in a peculiar way," Das, 30, told the agency.

"Whenever I put milk near the ant hill where the cobra lives, it always comes out to drink.

"I always get to see it every time I go near the ant hill. It has never harmed me," she added.

Villagers welcomed the wedding in the belief it would bring good fortune and laid on a feast for the big day.

Snakes and particularly the King Cobra are venerated in India as religious symbols worn by Lord Shiva, the god of destruction.

Das, from a lower caste, converted to the animal-loving vegetarian Vaishnav sect whose local elders gave her permission to marry the cobra, the world's largest venomous snake that can grow up to five metres.

"I am happy," said her mother Dyuti Bhoi, who has two other daughters and two sons to marry off.

"Bimbala was ill," Bhoi told local OTV channel. "We had no money to treat her. Then she started offering milk to the snake … she was cured. That made her fall in love."

Das has moved into a hut built close to the ant hill since the wedding.

Earlier this year, a tribal girl was married off to a dog on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar.

Now is this a co-incidence that two cross species marriages have happened in or around the same place Bhubaneswar ?

Odd Enuf – Just Believe It !!

Filed under: Unbelievable — justbelieveit @ 3:29 am

I have often pondered over the question:

Who created this world that we live in ?

Ofcourse the obvious answer is God. Yes there needs to be a force quite powerful enough to create something so intricately perfect. And that force is God !

But how many of you pondered about the question:

Who created God !

Well that is something we never question. It is a belief that we have inherited through the various generations of the human evolution.

The purpose of this blog is not to question the fundamentals of God and religion. I'm as much a believer in God as anyone else. But this blog is more to explore the fundamentals of belief and reason by visiting those things, events, places and people from around the world that beats the conventional human reasoning. The things which we call unbelievable !

The very world that we live in, the things that we perceive are a composition of various belief elements that we have been recorded and stored in our brain cells from infancy to adulthood. And whatever is unknown or unrecognized creates fear and awe !
But once we get accustomed to something, whatever was unbelievable first becomes a belief.

From time to time I'll post here oddities of the world that I come across. I hope to make this blog a fun ride through the unbelievables.
